Pressgang Mutiny is a Toronto‑based quartet formed in 2013 that has become one of the most respected contemporary keepers and innovators of traditional sea shanties and maritime work songs. Comprised of Richard Kott, James McKie, Tim Pyron and Stefan Read, the group blends deep historical knowledge with powerful four‑part vocal harmonies and rhythmic drive rooted in the very functions of shanty singing—call and response patterns originally used to coordinate heavy shipboard labour. Over more than a decade together they have travelled extensively across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Caribbean, performing at major folk and maritime festivals such as Folk Music Ontario and Folk Alliance International, and bringing audiences into connection with music that spans cultures and centuries. Pressgang Mutiny’s recordings—including their early albums Pressgang Mutiny (2016), Across the Western Ocean (2020), and their ambitious 2026 project Departure—showcase both classic work songs and innovative reimaginings that explore links between shanties and other musical traditions, incorporating guest artists, expanded instrumentation, and historical material in ways that honor the tradition while keeping it vital for modern listeners.
